Magpie Choir show – Wed 23rd May

Magpie Choir will be performing their second public show on Wednesday 23rd May at St Matthew’s hall (North Quay, Douglas). The show will include full choral arrangements of modern songs ranging from Adele to Radiohead, as well as solo performances.

Doors open at 5.30, the show starts at 6.00 and we’ll be asking £2 per head (paid at the door) to cover the rehearsal costs.

The group was started as a “community choir” in July 2011 – we don’t audition, rehearsals are very relaxed and the exclusive vocal arrangements are especially written & tailored to the group.

Summer Show Auditions

Crooked House’s first show is planned for Friday 24th August this year and you can find more details on the Summer Show 2012 page.

Auditions are planned for the weekend of 15/16th June in Douglas (venue to be confirmed) and are open to anyone regardless of previous experience. Get in touch to let us know who you are, what you can do and what time would be best for you.

If you can’t make the weekend in June but still want to audition, contact us with details of your availability and we’ll try and work something out.

Clara Barker’s Good Ideas Club

IOM-based singer/songwriter Clara Barker is already well known locally and has previously released an album (Indigo) and an EP (Hard Work & Whiskey) available through major retailers. Now, she’s set up a RocketHub crowd-sourcing campaign to help fund her next album The Good Ideas Club.

The page includes information and updates from Clara and details of ‘rewards’ on offer for anyone who donates – these range from ‘”my sincere thanks” for $1 upwards to a home-cooked meal and a live concert in your own living room for $1,500.

Summer show now taking submissions

We are now taking submissions for our summer show 2012 – artists, performers & crew. Anyone is welcome to audition, from soloists and groups to singers and contortionists, no experience necessary and the more brilliant or unusual the act the better.

You can also give a donation via Paypal on the Projects page to help make this event happen. Let us know your name or company and you’ll get a thank you in the programme, or you can contact us to discuss the details if you’d like to make a larger contribution and advertise at the venue.

Head over to our PROJECTS page to find more information or contact Crooked House if you have any questions.

Gothic Showcase (Summer 2012)

“The charms of horror please none but the brave” – Charles Baudelaire

We’re in the early planning stages of a Gothic Showcase for this summer, a unique evening that should be dark, disturbing and beautiful. We’re currently looking for acts to take part – anyone is welcome, regardless of previous experience in mainstream or alternative entertainment.

Take a look at the Projects page for more information and get in touch if you’d like to get involved. Auditions won’t be for a few months yet so you’ll have plenty of time to tweak your act or even create something brand new – the more sinister, the better!

Ghostgirl – Manx short film

Ghostgirl is a beautiful short film (around 30 mins) made by, among others, the amazing Christy & Dave of DAM Productions. The entire thing was filmed on the Isle of Man (those with a sharp eye will recognise the Sea Terminal) and used the Canon 5D Mk II which gives the shots that gorgeous shallow depth of field.

You can watch the film for free on Vimeo and find more information about the filmmaking process on the Ghostgirl Blog (these details will also be listed on our Notice Board).

Change is coming to Crooked House

Rather than aiming purely to build a database of IOM-based talent and cater only to its members, Crooked House will be moving towards creating unique and individual projects which any local artists and performers can get involved with.

The original plan was to bring in ‘members’ to the agency, create personal listings on the website and then produce photo shoots, musical performances, etc exclusive to these members. After some thought, I’ve decided to switch things around – the projects will be open for anyone to take part in and those involved will be credited on the website along with the project details. (These changes mean the original listings have been removed from the site and the members have been emailed personally to advise the details.)

There are several projects in the works at the moment and you can find more details on the Projects page. Currently there are several themed photo shoots looking for models and stylists, a flashmob looking for singers, dancers and a choreographer, and a Halloween themed cabaret-style show in its early stages looking for choral singers and a variety of stage acts.

If you think you’d like to get involved in any way, you can contact Louisa on crookedhouse@my-desk.co.uk with any questions or just to show your interest.

Faarey Photography

Since I’ll be running the in-house photo shoots once we get off the ground, I’ve set up a new and improved portfolio site to show my photographs.

Behind the scenes at Miss Saigon

A quick reminder that Becky Lawrence (who wrote our first article) is currently performing in Douglas Choral Union’s ‘Miss Saigon’ at the Gaiety Theatre until 18th February.

MTTV has a behind the scenes video which includes interviews with Becky and several castmates and a look at the sets.
